Packing is said to be an art and although true we all can learn from a few simple tips

 

  • The use of boxes help greatly and improve your storage space requirement, remember to fill boxes to capacity this will help prevent the box from collapsing and the use of packing materials such as paper and bubble wrap will help to protect items and fill gaps.
  • Marking and labelling of boxes will help easy reference and when un-packaging them.
  • Glassware and china should be wrapped individually and if possible stored on end in the boxes and not flat.
  • Pictures and mirrors are better placed in bubble wrap and stored on their end.
  • Refrigerators and freezers must be drain and free of water or ice, wiping the inside with bi-carbonate of soda and storing with doors open helps keep them free of smell.
  • Placing chairs seat to seat will not only save space but also protect them and then the area between the legs can be used to store smaller items.
  • Removing any extreme projection such as the legs of a table will help transportation of the table and then placing in a furniture wrap and placing on end will help on storage space. However it is often not possible to remove the legs with ease, should this be the case use the table, store fragile items under and place heavier items on top of the table, this will double this storage area and project the fragile items. Remember to cover the table surface with a furniture dust sheet.
  • Use the drawers of furniture to also storage smaller fragile items, pack the drawers first and remember to remove the drawers or secure them shut before transporting them.
  • We recommend you do not store clothing, should you wish to do so we advised you dry clean and treat the clothing items prior to storing. Should you store clothing they are best stored hanging and not packed close together this is to allow air circulation between garments, try to use open selves or better still use our special wardrobe boxes which are ideal and can be purchased from our shop
  • Placing heavier items into smaller boxes will help when moving and lifting them
  • Mattresses should be cleaned before storing and are best stored in mattress bags or covers and if possible placed on top of a flat surface to allow air circulation.
  • Remember when packing your van to start with the smallest items and leave the largest and heavy items to last. This will help when you come to unload, as these big heavy items will be required first. However is may not be true if you are attempting multiple trips or over a period of time - plan your journeys.
  • All petrol equipment should be drained and free of petrol before transporting or storing.
  • Gardening tools can also benefit from a spray of oil, and our large plastic chests boxes are ideal for their storage, and these can be purchased or hire from our onsite shop.

 

The use of our storage boxes can make a greater efficiency of your storage space, allowing many smaller items to be packed together and then allowing these boxes to be stacked thus maximising your floor space and also the use of our shelving systems designed to fit many of our rooms will assist and increase your storage area efficiency, and in some case this may be answer to reducing the size or number of storage rooms you require.
